David’s army were fighting on the frontlines of war again but David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
One day after sunset, David woke up from a nap and took a stroll on the rooftop of his palace. As he was walking, he saw Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, taking a bath. She was stunningly beautiful.
Hence, David sent someone to bring Bathsheba to the palace. He slept with her and she became pregnant.
In a desperate attempt to cover up his sin, David had Uriah killed.
Why was the king relaxing in his palace when the whole army was on the frontlines of the battlefield? David used to be an avid follower and seeker of God and God greatly blessed him. In the midst of fame and success, did he somehow forget that God was the Giver of all good things? Was this the reason why David gave in to sin?
The man who was after God’s own heart and the man with whom God was well pleased had now committed adultery and killed an innocent man.
Power, wealth and physical attraction are not sins in themselves. It is humanity’s lust for these things that prompts us to make big mistakes with irreparable consequences. That is the reason why a poet prayed this prayer: “Lord, please don’t let me become too rich or too poor. If I am too rich, I will forget You. If I am too poor, I will steal and dishonor Your name.”
