23. #Laban deceived Jacob
Genesis 29 : 21, 23, 25
Size: 38×47cm
Material: silk thread
Laban had two daughters; Leah was the elder and Rachel the younger. Jacob loved Rachel so much that he was willing to work for Laban for seven years in exchange for Rachel.
At the end of seven years, Jacob asked for Rachel's hand in marriage. However, the morning after the wedding, Jacob woke up to find Leah lying beside him. Jacob had married Leah! His uncle Laban had tricked him!
Jacob’s name means “to grab” and “to steal”. True to his name, Jacob spent all his life up till then deceiving others. He tricked Esau into giving up his rights as the firstborn son. Then, he tricked his father Isaac into blessing him. Who would have guessed that on his big day, Jacob would be on the receiving end of a deception?
To our surprise and despite his rage, Jacob was ultimately willing to be tricked. Because of his love for Rachel, he brushed off Laban's deception and bullying and worked for him for another seven years without pay in order to marry Rachel.
Blind love prevents us from reasoning clearly. However, genuine love covers all wrongs and produces life-giving fruit.
