For four hundred years, Israel had no prophets and God was silent.
The Babylonians destroyed the kingdom David had built. The people of Israel scattered to other countries. However, they were desperately longing for a Messiah to come and save them.
About that time, Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. Joseph traveled from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem, also known as the city of David, located in the region of Judea. When they came to Bethlehem, Mary, who was pregnant, was ready to deliver their first baby boy. They wrapped the baby in a blanket and laid Him in a manger because there was no room at the inn.
In the fields of Bethlehem, shepherds were taking their shifts tending sheep. Suddenly, angels appeared to tell them the good news. “Don't be afraid, we are here to announce a great news! It will affect the whole wide world!” the angels exclaimed. “Today, a Savior is born to you in the City of David. He is the Christ - the Messiah.” When the shepherds heard about this great news, they rushed to the inn and found baby Jesus lying in the manger.
The four hundred years of silence were broken at the birth of baby Jesus. A bright light had just flooded the darkness.
